This is nice hardware, the Sigma 8635 is a good chip. A swiss Army knife in terms of content playback. It plays anything, that's primarily the reason why it's in so many media extenders.

In my spare time I do Linux TV work on and off (stoth at linuxtv dot org), I'm no stranger to working on embedded Linux systems. So.... One of the things I'd like to see happen is a port of MythTV to the Sigma 863x platform, or better yet, a port of Boxee.

I'd love to get my hands on one of these units for a couple of reasons:

1) Because I happen to like SageTV and I could make good use of it on both PC and the Mac. (Have you seen my Mac HDPVR and firewire captures apps btw? Google for AVSNoodle or HDPVRCapture - in fact I can't believe you haven't mentioned them on your site yet!).

2) I'd like to kickstart some custom software for a whole range of 863x devices that are on the market. I certainly wouldn't trash the flash, but I would be experimenting with a mini / cut-down mythtv frontend.

How cool would that be?

Hi Brent. Great review and giveaway! I have been looking at the specs and following the forum news on these since announcement day. I have an HD100 currently running upstairs in the family room and a PS3 powering the the theater but the PS3 requires transcoding of the HDHR stream for it to playback with sound - so I really need one of these so I can play the recordings natively. :-)

Since upgrading to the HD PVR, one of my older computers doesn't have the horse power to play back HD. I was thinking of getting a new computer, but that seems a bit over kill. I think the Sage extender is the right choice.

Excellent piece of hardware. The SageTV software is extremely well-done as well. Having the choice to use the HD200 as a stand alone device or in conjunction with the SageTV software is excellent. By the way, Skyeclad, my HD100 will play blu-ray mkv format from a HD, so the HD200 will do so as well.

I have 2 HD100 and absolutely love them. But after reading about the HD200 and seeing the size comparison, I would gladly trade anyone an HD100 for an HD200.

The Sage extenders are the only way to go for anyone serious about using SageTV as their PVR.

I already have an HD100 for the family room but could certainly use the HD200 to experience its added capabilities as well as to add SageTV capabilities to my guest bedroom. That way, my out-of-town guests would be introduced to the wonders of SageTV in a more impressive way. Thanks for your many informative articles and input to the SageTV forums, which I stalk on a regular basis.

Great review, Brent, very detailed and covers all the bases. I am a long time user of BTv, Sage and a Linkplayer2 media extender. More recently set up a PopCornHour for my son. I would love to test drive the Sage HD extender, thanks for the chance to win one. Shipping to Canada can't be that expensive :-)

Wow, it makes the Snapstream BTV-link look like a kludge! I was looking at the D-Link DSM-520, but I don't need the wireless - the Sage looks like it does more.

I purchased the original HD100 approximately a year ago (in part thanks to your review of that unit), simply looking to replace my aging XBMC. The HD200 works great when used with a home automation / media control system via a touchscreen interface. Adds multimedia to any TV that is near a network drop. Low energy consumption, no heat or noise of a HTPC. Next project is to enable access to the home's automation system via the Sage on screen user interface. Will be a very complete solution. Nice job Sage!
